Air Media Server App Reviews

very good!

A good app wen you want to see a movie on you iPhone/iPad with a little space disk!

Looks slick; performance not great

I was very excited to try this app. I currently use Air Video which does the same thing, but only for videos. AMC looks smart and well-designed from an interface point of view, but so far the performance is enough to make me not recommend it. Videos take over ten seconds to begin playing, probably because of a slow transcoder. It is not even an HD file, just a plain old .avi. Air Video has no problem streaming it immediately. Not sure what the hang up is with AMC. Once it does start playing, it buffers every few seconds. Second issue: if you want to use authentication you have to provide your Macs user credentials. Im not keen on trusting that (plus my IP address) to anyone. I hope they implement a PIN system or application-specific password system. An app to keep an eye on. Lets hope future updates fix the problems.

Loving it...

I am really enjoying my first experiences with this solution. I had tried others, Rivet, AirTuner, also for use with AppleTV etc. Had used the other software streaming to PS3s as well but spotty performance at best. This solution is streaming HD(6 Gb file Avatar) to my iPad in backyard without skipping at all, some buffering but great overall! This soluiton streams same file to AppleTV no problem, file type is one that AppleTV would not normally play so its a great option as opposed to transcoding file into m4vs or whatever AppleTV plays. Loving it so far...

Internet Setting dont work

Contacted the company but they did not respond. Tried to use there "Automatically configure port forwarding" with my time capsule "2011" and connection timed out. So I cannot access it remortly which is the only reason I purched the iPad app. There is not customer support and no forums to find anwcers.

good

good at all, but sometime doesnt see anything - reboot helps and please add the blue dote under lines in the ico - itll be much better

Its Working Nicely

If you cannot connect, download the 1.03 version for Mac from their website. It works as advertised with ios 5.01 and Snow Leopard. Very cool application and for .99 - it is an easy decision to buy

Works like A Charm

Didnt have any trouble. It worked like a charm for me. Just downloaded the recommended version from the developers website. This apps performance is, without a doubt, far superior to any other player Ive tried! The optimized video quality is astounding.

32bit?

Its not immediately obvious either here or on the main website that 32bit macs arent supported. My 32bit core duo iMac is what Im currently using as my media center. Every other application I run on it supports 32bit no problem… including applications ive purchased specifically to support its role as a media/family computer (like playback for streaming to xbox360, to pick an example somewhat similar to AMS). Hey App Dynamic… older machines that stop getting use as a primary computer often end up taking on more roles than they originally had as they become family and/or network service machines. Please enable 32bit support. EDIT: Its only mentioned on the main website that 32bit machines arent supported on the download page. This does nothing to inform those who obtain the server app via the app store.

Work as advertised

Work swift on my 2008 macbook pro and iphone 4. With my configuration connecting through WiFi, 1) browsing 2M jpeg files have around 1-2 seconds delay 2) Zooming in to the images works fine 3) Playing a 4.7Gb Mkv file needs to wait around 20 seconds to buffer 4) fast forwarding may also needs 20 seconds I am satisified for the overall performance. Currently, it looks like the subtitle doesnt work.

Better and faster than Air Video!

Works as advertised.

Exactly What I Wanted

Ive been looking for this exactly. The iPhone/iPad app is $.99 at that!!!!

Great app, impeccable customer service

Air Media Server/Center is easy to use and works as advertised. The streaming is fast over WiFi or 3G (just make sure to enable port forwarding for 3G on the Air Media Server). The different file formats that they support is incredible and I have no doubt they will add to the list if anyone finds a file format that doesnt work. The thing that impresses me most is that this 1.1 version is already very solid and the support from the dev team is top notch. I sent some feature requests for Air Media Server to the dev team and they responded within an hour with access to beta versions so that I could tap into project folders within Aperture for my photo library. Then I found that I couldnt select more than one project folder at a time, so I responded back. Within an hour they sent me another beta with the functionality I requested! Obviously that kind of customer service is not sustainable forever, but it shows me that they believe in their product and they want to serve their customers. With that kind of dedication behind the product, I think this suite of apps will only get better.

Nice

I havent bought the iOS yet, but I really like the concept. Props to choosing Abbey Road! Wish they made it free for iOS, I wouldnt mind a few banner ads.

Very simple.

Wow, very simple. In just a few minutes I had the app installed on my iphone and imac and was streaming episodes of futurama in no time. I am a very happy customer. Bender Bending Rodriguez would be proud.

Awesome!

Totally cool!!! Easy to set up!!! Thank you!!!

Fast

Works pretty good. Though some times it continues to transcode even when no streams are being viewed. Ive tried killing the application on my ipad and that doesnt seem to stop it either. The only way to actually stop it is to kill the server or the ffmpeg process.

Awesome App

I loved this concept and shelled out the $2 for the companion iOS app. Had some bumps initially with getting the desktop app to work properly, but this could have been an issue with the wireless network I was using at the time. I leave most of my media on my iMac, which is better equipped for converting files, and have been very impressed by how well everything works. At most, I have had to wait 20 seconds for a file to start playing, and generally Im waiting 5 seconds or less. I have not had any issues with buffering in the middle of playing a file, either, which is always something I worry about with an app like this. This is an absolutely fantastic app, and it saves me the hassle of converting files if I want to watch them on my iPad!

Was hopeful but….

I tried this over the ultra reliable Air Video because it claimes to play ISO files. It tried for a while on my iPad but would only play the first 5 minutes or so then essentially thought the movie was over and it just quit. Every once in a while it seemed to know that the movie was 90 minutes and would work. The devs really need to spell out what sort of ISO will play and what wont so they can be created properly. The way it is, its pretty useless. It did seem to handle .avis pretty well. From my iPhone, trying to play a large ISO file says loading for 10 minutes until I give up and quit it or the phone sleeps. Never even tries to play the first 5 minutes. If this worked it would be a winner but, sadly, it doesnt.

Not working

I installed first Air Video Free and the Air Media Server. As it did not work I installed Air Video. Air Video does not recognize my server/router even if it is the most common router in Germany. It also ask for a Air Media Server version 2.O but the one available on the Apple Store is version 1.1.4 Very strange, may be I do something wrong. But if you are not an IT wizzard, just forget it.

Not quite up to speed

After using Air Video, I thought this might be similar but it has much weaker features for video. I am not sure where the fault lies with Air Video but my Airport Extreme keeps losing contact with the usb drive I have connected to it. Will Air Media do the same? Time will tell. For now I only give two stars. If they upgrade the features and make it possible to select folders on the drives attached to my Airport Extreme AND the Airport Extreme does not lose contact with my server computer, THEN we might have something worth while.
